Remote working for medical reason: a useful tool but…

30/06/2025

Airbus HR communicated on May 19th 2025 about the new social status related to working conditions and
implemented in 2024, including a focus on remote-working for medical reason. Your comments are welcome to help us provide feedback to HR.

First, we need to remember that remote working has existed only for a few years, thanks to new mobile IT
equipment, and has increased a lot since the COVID period. Before this, employees were just on sick-leave when required.

The main objective of remote-working for medical reasons is to maintain professional activity while preserving the employee’s health.

Remote working for “medical reason” IS NOT:

  • part of the remote working agreement,
  • sick leave,
  • therapeutic part time.

Remote working for “medical reason” IS:

  • linked to temporary physical difficulty preventing on-site work,
  • linked to a gradual return after recovery,
  • exclusively at the discretion of the company doctor after an employee interview, subject to potential regular extensions.

This solution :

  • Shall not replace a sick leave or therapeutic part time, however could be a better solution
  • Shall not be subject to psychological manipulation from management, the decision shall remain under the entire responsibility of the company doctor, and with regular follow-up of the employee
  • Shall remain a temporary solution, aiming to return to normal within a reasonable period. The employee shall benefit from:
  1. the protection from HR, especially in case root causes are related to the position, it is necessary to take remedial measures with the manager and HR to avoid the situation happening again when returning to site,
  2. a psychological support which might help to accept the new situation and help establish a new balance,
  3. no discrimination related to this specific period, through a degradation of his global performance, which should remain based on smart objectives.

CFDT Union remains available to employees who might need more information on this topic.
